It was a night to remember for a nursing student when she was crowned Miss Hawaii Filipina 2010 last July 24 at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa during the 51st Annual Miss Hawaii Filipina Scholarship Pageant.

“I was so surprised because every contestant did a great job and I knew from the beginning that it will be a tight competition,”
Queen  Margaret Pascual said. “As soon as they called my name, I felt overjoyed and happy such that all these feelings came all at once over my body,” she added.

Margaret who represented Oahu bested three other contestants representing the other islands. Miss Maui Filipina Dibea Lapid was first runner-up, Miss Kauai Filipina Jayna Shaffer was second runner-up, and Miss Hawaii Island Tiana Gillia was third runner-up.

In her terno speech, Margaret expounded on the role of family solidarity in making one’s voice heard. She believes that family solidarity is dealing with communication primarily and staying loyal to your family. She also said, “When families come together and communicate, they will lay that  solid foundation  for a better decision making process.”

With an ardent desire to give back to her community by helping and supporting them, she decided to pursue a nursing career and hopes to become a professional registered nurse.  She’s a sophomore student at University of Hawaii at Manoa.

During her spare time, Margaret loves to go hiking. “We live in Hawaii and it’s blessed with breathtaking mountain rails like Diamond Head and Koko Head. You can be physically active and at the same time enjoy the beautiful scenery,” she said.

As part of her prize package, she will have a chance to visit the Philippines. Asked what she will visit, she said,  “I watch Filipino TV programs a lot and I’m fascinated by this “Bantay Bata” project. It’s so endearing and I hope that during my reign, I will help raise funds and donate it to the project.  Also, I will visit my mother’s place in the Bicol region and will taste their famous “Bicol Express. Definitely, I will visit Ilocos Norte where my father grew up.”

As a piece of advice to the youth, she said, “Get involved in the community.”
Margaret is the proud daughter of Segundino and Maria Lucy Pascual.
